(Cavite, Philippines- August 17, 2009) The managers of Island Cove Hotel and Leisure Park, together with Island Cove’s Bayanihan Employees’ Council officers, recently spent a day planting fruit bearing trees and vegetable patches at the Cavite Alapan site of Gawad Kalinga.
This project was conducted to support GK’s Bayan-Anihan Program that aims to help supplement the food requirements and generate jobs for the residents of the community. Some seventy-five families are beneficiaries of this project. Seedlings and grafts of mangoes, lanzones, ginger lily, bananas, wild mangosteen, coconut, eggplant, pumpkin and gourd were planted.
Island Cove Managing Director Gilbert Remulla said, “Sometimes, opportunity is what starts greatness. By giving the GK residents a source of food and possible income, they are one step closer to a better life.”
Last year, Island Cove hosted a benefit tournament, dubbed as “Target Hope”, at its then newly opened paintball arena to raise funds for this project. Congressmen played against members of the media. In the end, the media emerged triumphant.
Sponsors of the paintball tournament include Asia United Bank- Imus branch; Tableria Central (Hardware and Lumber)- Binakayan, Cavite; Cavite, 3rd district Representative Boying Remulla, and Main Pepsi Cola Products Philippines, Inc. – Southern Tagalog Regional Operations in Cabuyao Laguna.
In addition to the GK planting, a ‘mini-party’ for the children of the residents was held. Breakfast and lunch were also served to the residents.
To cap off the program, the Island Cove employees turned over their donations of books, school materials, clothes, and house materials to the community.
